What is Agentic Commerce?

Agentic Commerce is the process by which AI agents find, compare and purchase products on behalf of consumers. While AI search has been gathering momentum since 2023, the ability for AI agents to independently execute purchases arrived in late 2025.

POWERING AGENTIC COMMERCE IN 2026

The Universal Commerce Protocol

In January 2026, Google and Shopify announced a new Universal Commerce Protocol which is expected to drive rapid adoption of Agentic Commerce. The UCP allows merchants to feed their products to a whole range of AI agents, including but not limited to Google AI Mode, Gemini & ChatGPT. Customers checkout within the AI agent, and merchants receive orders and payments back into their Shopify Admin.

The Shopify Advantage

Shopify co-achitected the new Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in partnership with Google and others and is providing key infrastructure including embedded checkouts.

All Shopify stores will have Agentic Storefront functionality as standard. Rollout to UK merchants is expected in the first half of 2026. For non-Shopify merchants, a standalone Shopify Agentic plan will be available, allowing them to convert their product catalog to a Shopify Catalog and sell on AI channels.
